Born on January 7, 1989, Wendell began his career at Goiás, a club from the central-western state of Goiás. He showed early promise as a striker, earning the distinction of finishing as the top scorer of the Campeonato Brasileiro Sub-20 in 2006 before being promoted to the senior squad the following year. His professional debut came on May 12, 2007, in a Campeonato Brasileiro Série A match, when he came on as a sixty-third-minute substitute for Fabrício Carvalho in a 2–0 away defeat to São Paulo. The path upward was slower than his teenage talent had suggested it might be.
