In the predawn darkness of February 6, 2023, one of the most powerful earthquakes in recorded history tore through southern Turkey and northwestern Syria, reducing ancient cities to rubble, killing tens of thousands of people, and leaving a scar across the landscape and the human geography of the region that will take generations to fully assess. At 4:17 in the morning local time, a moment magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck, with its epicenter located 37 kilometers west-northwest of Gaziantep. The shaking achieved a Mercalli intensity of XII, the scale's maximum rating of "Extreme," around the epicenter and in the historic city of Antakya. Nine hours later, at 1:24 in the afternoon, a second massive earthquake registering magnitude 7.7 struck a different location approximately 95 kilometers north-northwest of the first. Two catastrophic events in a single day, striking an already devastated region while rescue workers were still pulling survivors from the first collapse.
The geological stage for this disaster had been set over millions of years. The region sits at the intersection of three major tectonic plates: the African plate, the Arabian plate, and the Anatolian sub-plate. The boundary between the African and Arabian plates is defined by the Dead Sea Transform, a major left-lateral strike-slip fault zone. At its northern end, the Dead Sea Transform meets the East Anatolian Fault at the Marash triple junction. The East Anatolian Fault, itself roughly 700 kilometers long and subdivided into seven main segments, accommodates the westward movement of the Anatolian plate as it is pushed in that direction by the northward motion of the Arabian plate. The seismic sequence of February 6, 2023 resulted from shallow strike-slip faulting along segments of the Dead Sea Transform, the East Anatolian Fault, and the Sürgü-Çardak fault system. Estimated slip rates on different segments of the East Anatolian Fault range from 10 millimeters per year in the northeast down to 2.9 millimeters per year on the southernmost Amanos segment, indicating a fault system that accumulates and releases stress at varying rates across its length.
The magnitude 7.8 earthquake was the largest to strike Turkey since the 1939 Erzincan earthquake of the same magnitude, and it ranks jointly as the second-largest earthquake in the country's recorded history, after some estimates for the 1668 North Anatolia earthquake. In the context of the broader region, it was also one of the strongest earthquakes ever documented in the Levant. The shaking was felt as far away as Egypt and along Turkey's Black Sea coast, hundreds of kilometers from the epicenter.
The human consequences were on a scale that overwhelmed comprehension. In Turkey, the confirmed death toll reached 53,537 people. Estimates for the number of deaths in Syria ranged between 5,951 and 8,476, reflecting the difficulty of gathering accurate information in a country already devastated by more than a decade of civil war. Combined, the disaster killed more than 59,000 people, making it the deadliest earthquake in present-day Turkey since the 526 Antioch earthquake and the deadliest natural disaster in the country's modern history. It was also the deadliest earthquake in present-day Syria since the 1822 Aleppo earthquake, the deadliest earthquake globally since the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and the fifth-deadliest earthquake of the entire twenty-first century.
The damage was spread across an area of approximately 350,000 square kilometers, roughly equivalent in size to Germany. An estimated 14 million people, representing 16 percent of Turkey's total population, were affected by the disaster. Development experts from the United Nations estimated that approximately 1.5 million people were left homeless. The financial toll was staggering: damage in Turkey was estimated at $148.8 billion, representing nine percent of the country's GDP. Syria sustained an estimated $9 billion in damage, an enormous burden for a country whose infrastructure had already been shredded by years of conflict.
The initial rescue and relief effort confronted enormous obstacles. Damaged roads, severe winter storms, and widespread disruption to communications infrastructure hampered the work of Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency. The agency deployed a search-and-rescue force of 60,000 personnel, 5,000 health workers, and 30,000 volunteers. Turkey called for international assistance, and the response was remarkable in scale: more than 141,000 people from 94 countries joined the effort, representing one of the largest international humanitarian responses in history. The destruction of Antakya, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, was particularly painful: this ancient city near the Turkish-Syrian border, known in antiquity as Antioch on the Orontes and of profound significance in Christian history as the place where the followers of Jesus were first called Christians, lost a substantial portion of its historic urban fabric in the shaking. Across the affected region, questions about building code enforcement, corruption in the construction industry, and the adequacy of disaster preparedness became urgent and politically charged in the aftermath of a catastrophe that many experts argued should never have been as deadly as it was.
