Brenner Souza da Silva, known professionally as Brenner, is a Brazilian forward whose career trajectory has taken him from the youth academies of São Paulo to the heights of South American and European competition, marked by a breakout season of extraordinary scoring form that announced him to a continental audience.
Born on January 16, 2000, in Cuiabá in the state of Mato Grosso, Brenner joined the youth academy at São Paulo Futebol Clube in 2011 when he was eleven years old. His development through the youth ranks was steady if unspectacular, and prior to the 2017 season, coach Dorival Júnior included him in the club's first-team setup. He made his senior competitive debut on June 21, 2017, entering as a substitute in the 76th minute of a Série A match against Athletico Paranaense, a game São Paulo lost 1–0.
His first professional goal followed later that year, on December 3, 2017, when he scored the opening goal in a 1–1 draw against Bahia. He finished that debut season with just one goal in four appearances, a modest start that reflected his role as a peripheral option. The following season brought nine appearances in the Campeonato Paulista and six in Série A, with a single goal in each competition — still functioning primarily as a substitute option rather than a regular starter.
In May 2019, São Paulo sent him on loan to fellow top-flight club Fluminense. He cited the influence of then-head coach Fernando Diniz as a significant factor in his decision to accept the move. He debuted for Fluminense on June 2, 2019, against Athletico Paranaense, again entering as a substitute, this time in a 3–0 defeat. The loan stint produced six appearances but no goals, and he returned to São Paulo when the season ended.
January 2020 brought a meaningful development: Fernando Diniz arrived as head coach of São Paulo, reuniting Brenner with the manager who had worked with him at Fluminense. Diniz's confidence in the young forward proved to be a turning point. Brenner made his first appearance of the season in a 2–0 victory over Água Santa in the Campeonato Paulista and scored his first goal of the campaign in a 1–1 draw against Novorizontino, providing the equalizer in the 86th minute.
The early months of 2020 saw his progress disrupted by the global COVID-19 pandemic, which paused the football calendar in March. He had continued to be used sparingly before that interruption, unable to displace first-choice forwards Alexandre Pato and Pablo. When São Paulo returned to the pitch on July 26, Brenner started in a 3–1 victory over Guarani. August brought the departure of Pato, and with that his opportunity expanded significantly.
He scored his first Série A goal of the season on August 30, netting in the second minute of stoppage time to secure a 2–1 victory over Corinthians. From that moment, he never looked back. On September 6, he scored the equalizer in a 3–1 home victory over Fluminense, his former loan club. On September 17, he made his debut in the Copa Libertadores, coming on as a substitute against River Plate in a 2–2 draw. Five days later, in Quito on September 22, he scored his first goal in the competition against L.D.U. Quito in a 4–2 away defeat.
October 2020 brought his complete transformation into a regular starter after Pablo's poor form gave Diniz reason to change the lineup. On October 7, Brenner scored a brace in a 3–0 Série A win over Goianiense. On October 14, he scored twice in the Copa do Brasil against Fortaleza, a match that ended 3–3. He then scored in four consecutive matches between October 20 and November 1, recording braces against Fortaleza in the second leg of the Copa do Brasil and against Argentine club Lanús in the Copa Sudamericana.
The climax of his breakout season came on November 11, when a brace against Flamengo made him São Paulo's highest scorer in a single season since 2015, reaching 17 goals in 26 matches. His partnership with new signing Luciano — who had contributed 11 goals of his own by that point — gave São Paulo a combined total of 28 goals from just two players, representing fully half of the club's seasonal output. Brenner continued to contribute in December, scoring in a 3–0 victory over Goiás that proved significant in the Série A title race.
After his time in Brazil, Brenner moved to Europe and later returned to South American football, eventually joining Vasco da Gama in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A.
